Express entry is an online system that is used to manage immigration applications for skilled workers.

Understanding Express Entry

Express Entry Programs​

​There are 3 immigration programs managed through express entry:

  • Canadian Experience Class

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program

  • Federal Skilled Trades Program

What are the minimum requirements to apply for the Canadian Experience Class?

  • Meet the required language levels for writing, reading, listening and speaking

  • Have a minimum of 1 year skilled work experience in Canada in the last 3 years while under temporary resident status with authorization to work

Who cannot apply for the Canadian Experience Class?

  • A refugee claimant in Canada

  • Working in Canada without authorization

  • Gained work experience without temporary resident status in Canada

What are the minimum requirements to apply for the Federal Skilled Worker Program?

  • Skilled work experience

    • Have worked in managerial jobs, professional jobs or technical jobs and skilled trades

  • Language ability

    • Take the approved language tests in English or French

    • Test results are valid for 2 years after the date of the  test result

  • Education:

    • If you attended Canadian school, you must provide a certificate, diploma, or degree from a Canadian high school or post-secondary institution 

    • If you have foreign education you must have a completed credential and an Educational Credential Assessment for immigration purposes from a designated organization showing that your education is equivalent to a completed certificate, diploma, or degree from a Canadian high school or post-secondary institution ​

  • Have enough money to settle in Canada, unless you are currently able to work in Canada or have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer

  • Must be admissible to come to Canada

What are the minimum requirements to apply for the Federal Skilled Trades Program?

 

  • Meet the required language levels for writing, reading, listening and speaking

  • Have a minimum of 2 years of full time work experience or an equivalent part time work experience in a skilled trade within the 5 years before you apply

  • Meet the National Occupational Classification job requirements

  • Have a valid full time job offer for a minimum of 1 year or a certificate qualification in that particular skill trade issued by a Canadian authority.

  • Have enough money to settle in Canada, unless you are currently able to work in Canada or have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer

  • Must be admissible to come to Canada
