Temporary Resident Permit

A Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) is a document that allows someone who is ineligible or does not meet the standards of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act or Regulations to enter or remain in Canada as a temporary or permanent resident.

A TRP is valid for a specified period of time and is printed or written on your TRP as a "Date of Issue", "Expiry Date," "Permit in force from" or a "Permit in force until date."

Am I eligible for a Temporary Resident Permit?

You and your family members are lawfully permitted to enter Canada temporarily as TRP holders. You are, however, limited in the length of time you can stay and are subject to a number of other restrictions. 


The following factors, may affect your eligibility for another TRP: 


  • You did not adhere to the TRP's terms and conditions

  • You stayed in Canada past the expiration date of your visa

  • You left and returned to Canada without permission

  • You were declared inadmissible to Canada for reasons other than those for which the TRP was granted in the first place; 

  • You worked or studied without obtaining the necessary employment or study authorization

  • You provided a passport that was either expired or invalid

TRP is expired

As a TRP holder, you will not be able to reclaim your temporary resident status. If your TRP has expired or you have violated any of your TRP conditions, you have committed an offence under IRPA which may be subject to an admissibility hearing resulting in your deportation from Canada.
